What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, but knowing what to expect can help ease any anxiety. The first session is all about beginning to build trust, exploring your goals, and helping you feel comfortable with the therapy process. Here’s what you need to know:

Ease Into Therapy: Share What Feels Right Before We Start

A few days before our first session, I’ll send you a brief questionnaire through my secure online portal. This is an opportunity for you to share anything you’d like me to know in advance—whether it’s a little about yourself, your therapy goals, or anything that would help you feel more comfortable in our first session.

If you need accommodations or there’s something that would make therapy feel safer for you, you’re welcome to let me know ahead of time. I’ll review your responses before we meet so we can start in a way that feels supportive and personalized for you.

A Supportive Conversation—At Your Own Pace

There’s no pressure to share everything at once, and you don’t need to have the “perfect” way to explain your story. You are in control of what you want to share, and we’ll move at a pace that feels right for you.

The first session is a gentle, supportive conversation where I’ll ask questions to understand what brought you to therapy, explore your goals, and discuss how I can best support you. My priority is creating a space where you feel safe, heard, and respected—whether you’re ready to dive in or prefer to take things slowly.

Your Privacy & Confidentiality

Everything you share in therapy is confidential, with a few legal exceptions that we’ll discuss in our first session. These limits to confidentiality apply to situations involving harm to yourself or others. My goal is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you feel comfortable opening up.

It’s Okay to Feel Uncertain

It’s normal to leave your first session feeling relieved, curious, or even uncertain—and that’s completely okay. Starting therapy is a big step, and the first session is just the beginning of your journey toward healing.
